Grateful: Day 4, Ancestors
It’s the day after Halloween, November 1. In my high school Spanish II class I learned this is el Dia de los Muertos or The Day of the Dead. In the Mexican culture, it’s the day they celebrate and remember loved ones who have passed away. At the time, I thought it was scary. I saw images of skulls and graveyards and that creeped me out. Then, I got distracted by and chose to focus on the food element (as I always do). It includes cooking your loved ones’ favorite foods, which is less eery than dead people. Pasta e Fagioli aka Pasta “Fazool”
I really like Italian food. According to my mother it’s always been that way. In her womb, I demanded it. When she was pregnant with me, she said, she craved anything with pasta and tomatoes. I believe her. I like tomatoes hot, cold, sliced, diced, stewed, sauced, fried or jammed. They’re comfort food for me. Therefore, I like the Olive Garden. I affectionately refer to it as “The O. G.”

Grateful: Day 3, Halloween Fun
Happy Halloween! Today, I’m grateful for fun times with little people. This image is from about 6 years ago when I dressed my daughter as Michael Jackson. It was a real thriller (get it?) hunting for the right pieces at the thrift store, then watching it all come together. Halloween is one occasion that forces us to rekindle our imaginations. It’s hard not to be affected by the wonder and excitement it causes for children all around you.
